Speaker: Ellen Hargett, RN CPHQ
As Executive Director of Quality for a three-hospital system in a competitive urban environment, Ellen Hargett has overseen a quality program restructure which has received national recognition for its outcomes. In 2016 and 2017, her organization received the Truven Healthcare Advantage award for Quality and Efficiency. The award was granted based on the reorganization of the quality program, including structure and processes, and the dramatic impact on outcomes such as mortality, complications and length of stay. The program is unique in that it is data driven, formally engages physicians, and integrates information from bench marking applications. Their successes and challenges will appeal to a broad audience of people invested in improving healthcare quality. Ellen has spoken and several national and state quality conferences and is recognized for her down-to- earth, candid presentation style as well as bringing humor and transparency to complex information.
Description:
This session is intended to enable the Quality Professional to drive organizational improvement, by changing the culture from one of traditional committees to data-driven, action-oriented teams. Despite increasing demands and limited resources, this Quality Program, in a resource-poor community hospital system, has successfully driven dramatic operations improvement in length of stay, healthcare acquired infections and complications, by sun-setting committees and chartering small dynamic teams. In this session, attendees will learn the difference between action-oriented teams and traditional committees, quantify their value and/or cost, and acquire simple tools for powerful facilitation.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate between a committee and a team
- Quantify the cost of existing committees vs data-driven teams
- Implement driver diagrams for key performance metrics
